The 2018-19 Teaching Forums are hosted by the Center for Faculty Development. These sessions address issues of pedagogy, whether you teach face-to-face, online, or via IVN. Join your colleagues to explore techniques you might utilize in your own courses.  

Each event will be held in the International Center, Room 319.

Teaching with Empathy

Being empathetic to student experiences reaches beyond allowing assignment extensions, and listening to their complex life stories. What does it mean to be empathetic with your students in the classroom? How can course discussions include empathy as a guideline? This session will explore ways to relate to students as a support system for growth in understanding course content.

Gulf Park: Teaching Gen Z Students in the Changing World of Higher Education

This session will explore research on “Millennial” and “Generation Z” students and consider implications of generational change for teaching and learning in higher education. As the landscape of higher education has changed dramatically in the past three decades, to what extent has—or should—those shifts impact how we teach and learn? Participants will consider research on today’s college students and best practices for motivating and challenging our newest generation, with particular emphasis on the student body at Southern Miss.

Recognizing Implicit Bias

Connecting the Classroom with Academic Integrity

This session, led by USM’s Academic Integrity Officer, Dr. Cindy Blackwell, will explore how to create course assignments that deter students from academic dishonesty, and how to detect when instances have occurred. Taking an educational approach the session also will address what to do when you find a student who is in violation of the policy.

What are strategies to facilitate the collaborative process? The panelists will discuss the importance of collaborative learning and ways to approach creating assignments.

Facilitating Discussions in Small and Large Classrooms

Panelists: Dr. Hugh Broome, Chemistry; Dr. Mark Miller, Geography and Geology; Dr. Katie James, Sociology/Interdisciplinary Studies 

This session will delve into strategies to enhance class discussions: What are your expectations for student participation in class discussions? How can you create thought provoking questions? How do you respond when students offer an answer that shifts the focus of the discussion? The panelists will discuss strategies to invigorate discussions, encourage participation from more students, and adapt to different class sizes and levels.
