Event Schedule

Earth Week is a week-long set of programming and events coordinated by the Office of Sustainability to celebrate sustainability and educate students and faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi of its importance. 


Day Events
Monday (4/17/17)

Beekeeping EcoEagle Lecture, 12:15-1:00pm, Thad Cochran Center Rm. 214

Please join for a lecture on the importance of beekeeping.  Dr. Edward Hafer, Associate Professor of Music History, will give a presentation on his personal experiences of raising bees and why owning hives can benefit the environment.

Tuesday (4/18/17)

Earth Poetry Open-Mic Night, 8-10pm, T-bones Cafe, Hattiesburg

Join us for a night of environmentally themed poetry and great food and coffee.  This event is free and open to all.  Walk-in participants are welcome, but registration is encouraged.  Both original poems and classic works of environmental literature may be read.  Participants can register by emailing melissa.covington@usm.edu

Junk Mail Booth, 11am-1pm, Shoemaker Square

Do you ever get tired of receiving countless magazines and/or soliciting advertisements in the mail? Join us at Shoemaker Square to learn how to quickly and efficiently remove yourself from mailing lists.

Wednesday (4/19/17)

Southern Miss Earth Fair, 10am-1pm, Shoemaker Square

Many organizations from campus and the surrounding community will be sharing their environmental messages.

Thursday (4/20/17)

Hattiesburg Earth Day Celebration/Farmers' Market, 3:00p - 6:00pm, Town Square Park

The City of Hattiesburg will be hosting an Earth Fair in conjunction with the downtown Farmers' Market. There will be booths representing local organizations, as well as live music, fresh local food, and fun!

Friday (4/22/16)

Field Trip to Lake Thoreau, 11am-1pm.

Join us on a Wildflower Walk & Pollinator Talk where participants will learn about various native species of Mississippi flowers and the connections between those species and their pollinators. The event is free and transportation will be provided. If you are interested in attending, please email Melissa.covington@usm.edu to reserve a spot.



 Saturday (4/22/17)  Right Way to Throw Away Day, 8am - 2pm


The City of Hattiesburg and many other local and regional entities are sponsoring a free collection of household hazardous material. The event will be held at two locations, Bobby L. Chain Airport and the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center. This is a great opportunity to properly dispose of items like paint, lawn chemicals, household cleaners, etc. Electronics are also accepted so gather up your unusable gadgets to allow them to be disposed of appropriately.
