Earth Week is a week-long set of programming and events coordinated by the Office of Sustainability to celebrate sustainability and educate students and faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi of its importance.
Campus Nature Walk, 12:15-12:45pm. Meet at Moffett Health Center
Loren Erickson, Superintendent of Campus Lands, will be sharing his vast knowledge of the plants we see, and Dr. Crawford will explain the health benefits of walking.
Earth Poetry Open-Mic Night, 8-10pm, T-bones Cafe, Hattiesburg
Join us for a night of environmentally themed poetry and great food and coffee. This event is free and open to all. Walk-in participants are welcome, but registration is encouraged. Both original poems and classic works of environmental literature may be read. Participants can register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Southern Miss Earth Fair, 10am-1pm, Shoemaker Square
Many organizations from campus and the surrounding community will be sharing their environmental messages.
Health Fair and Farmers' Market, 11am-2pm, Union lobby and Shoemaker Square
The Health is Golden Initiative will be hosting a health and wellness fair for the campus community in the Union Lobby. There will be free screenings, activities, health education, and information about health resources on campus. In conjunction with this event, the Office of Sustainability will be hosting a farmers' market in Shoemaker Square.
Pollinator Celebration, 12:15pm on the south side of the Payne Center
This event highlights the importance of pollinators, the current challenges facing their populations, and what their decline means to agriculture and society as a whole. Biology professor Mike Davis will be speaking, as well as Loren Erickson, Superintendent of Campus Lands. Following the presentations, Loren will highlight the newly-planted flowers and shrubs which attract and sustain pollinators, and enhance the natural beauty of the Southern Miss campus.
Field Trip to local sustainable home, 11am-1pm.
Join us for a fascinating tour of Cliff Burgess' sustainable home just north of Hattiesburg. Solar arrays, a wind turbine, and geothermal heating and cooling are just a few of the things you will see on this tour. If you are interested in participating, please email email@example.com to register.
