River Camp II: Appreciating the Life of the Pascagoula Watershed

July 15 – July 19, 2019

Rising 3rd through 5th grade students that attend school in Perry County

Cost: free!!!

Our flagship summer camp is River Camp.  This year we are pleased to partner with our friends at Georgia Pacific Leaf River Cellulose to offer free camp tuition to Perry County school children! If your child goes to a public school in Perry County and is a rising 3rd - 5th grade student, then they are eligible for this free program!  Applicants must be in good academic standing and must complete a short essay (< 1,000 characters) stating why rivers and watersheds are important to them.  There are only 20 slots available for this camp so preference will be given to students with a desire to learn. Applications are required (link available below; due May 24th) and selected campers will be notified by May 31st.

This camp will explore the ecology of the singing river of south Mississippi, the Pascagoula River. Students will explore the Pascagoula Watershed including the headwaters at Lake Thoreau, Black Creek, Leaf River, and the Pascagoula River itself as it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Camp activities include canoeing Black Creek, seining fish in the Leaf River, visiting the MS Museum of Natural Science in Jackson, Pascagoula River Tour (Moss Point).  We will spend several days traveling to unique habitats surrounding the Pascagoula Watershed, interact with some of the flora and fauna that rely on it, as well as explore the important ecological relationships that connect this watershed to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Students will learn about the largest unimpeded river system in the lower 48 states through hands-on activities out in the field and in the classroom. If your kid likes to be outside, enjoys nature, and has fun in local streams and rivers, then this the camp for them!

This summer camp is a Monday-Friday day camp hosted at the Lake Thoreau Environmental Center, however, pick up and drop off will occur at McCoy Park in New Augusta.  Check-in will be at 8:00 a.m. each day and checkout will occur at 5:00 p.m.
