Ty Johnson, a current Human Capital Development doctoral student, was recently selected as the recipient of the O’Keefe Companies Endowment – Gulf Coast Scholarship for the 2026–2027 academic year. This scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate academic promise, financial need, and a strong commitment to community service.

Reggie Matthews, Babatunde Adebayo, and BenG Goudy recently contributed to the Southern Spark 2026 Conference, Grounded Futures: AI in the South. Babatunde and Reggie were featured in the Generative Minds journal, with Babatunde contributing the research article, “Generative Artificial Intelligence in Human Resource Development: Advancing Assessment Practices for Career Readiness in Higher Education,” and Reggie contributing a featured paper, “From Prompt to Product.” BenG presented his poster, “Designing an Instructional Technology Intervention to Increase AI Readiness Among Adult Learners in Community-Based Education Programs.”

Antara Mahbub was recently selected as a recipient of the Committee on Services and Resources for Women (CRSW) 2025–2026 Peggy Jean Connor Competition award. She received $875 in funding to support her research project, “Building STEM Woman Career Ready: How Emotional Intelligence, Mental Well-being, and Resilience Shape Her Future.” This recognition highlights the quality and importance of her work and its potential impact on advancing and supporting women in STEM fields.

Terry Cullum, Dr. Mary Funk, BenG Goudy, and Dr. Joyce Powell were recently recognized at the USM Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony for earning their Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) AI in Higher Education Endorsement during the Spring 2026 semester. The endorsement recognizes educators who have engaged in professional development focused on the thoughtful and effective integration of artificial intelligence in higher education.

Dr. Shinhee Park and Dr. Zikai Zhou were recently recognized at the USM Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony as recipients of Coursera Integration Mini-Grants. The mini-grant program, supported by the Office of the Provost, encourages faculty to integrate Coursera Career Academy content, industry-recognized micro-credentials, and guided projects into the curriculum to enhance student learning, engagement, and career readiness.

Dr. Bradley Winton, received the Junior Faculty Outstanding Research Award. The University Faculty Excellence Awards recognize faculty members for outstanding efforts and achievements in research, teaching, and service. The Outstanding Junior Faculty Awards specifically honor early-career faculty who have demonstrated excellence and a strong trajectory of future promise.

Dr. Joyce Powell, Assistant Director of the School of Leadership, received the 2025 Staff Excellence (Professional) Award. The Staff Excellence Awards honor staff members who demonstrate exceptional commitment and dedication. Recipients are recognized for their integrity, positive attitude, interpersonal skills, flexibility, reliability, and willingness to continuously learn and grow.

Dr. Casey Maugh Funderburk was recognized at the USM Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony for receiving the designation of ACUE Distinguished Teaching Scholar. This distinction recognizes faculty who have successfully completed five semesters in the ACUE Faculty Development Institute, an intensive professional development program focused on evidence-based teaching practices, course design, student engagement, and instructional excellence.

Dr. Zikai Zhou was recognized at the USM Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony as a 2025 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellow. Dr. Zhou’s cohort explored the topic “Thoughtful Incorporation/Prohibition of AI in the Curriculum,” examining how artificial intelligence can be intentionally and effectively addressed within higher education learning environments.

Several of our Human Capital Development doctoral students recently presented their research at the 2026 Susan A. Siltanen Graduate Student Research Symposium. Susan Dobson  earned 2nd place in the Social and Education Sciences and Business category for her impressive PowerPoint presentation. This annual symposium offers graduate students a platform to share their research, engage with peers, and contribute to a dynamic scholarly community.

Dr. Vishal Arghode coauthored the article, “Learning without walls: Informal and collective learning in Latin American non-profits.” The article was recently published in 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 and contributes valuable insight to global conversations on learning and development. In addition, Dr. Arghode has been appointed as an Associate Editor for 𝘖𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭. In this role, he will support the peer review process and contribute to the advancement of scholarly work in the field.

This certification is a globally recognized certification that validates the ability to apply HR knowledge and make effective workplace decisions. Sharessa was also selected to participate in LEAD LSU, a competitive leadership development program for high-performing employees with strong leadership potential.

Hosted by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, the One Coast Awards recognize individuals who are making a meaningful impact across our region. Dr. Breland’s leadership and commitment to the Gulf Coast community continue to elevate the School of Leadership and inspire those around him.

Tracy Wolverton and Modist Jones presented, while Sandra Kelly and Reggie Matthews also attended; Reggie currently serves on the 2026 MECA Executive Board and will serve as MECA President for the 2027 conference.

This competitive award recognizes faculty who are committed to developing innovative teaching strategies that enhance instruction and strengthen the assessment of student learning.

Dr. Casey Maugh Funderburk, Associate Professor, and Dr. Bradley Winton, Assistant Professor, recently published their article, “Connecting Collectivism and Commitment: The Role of Faith‐Based Subcultures in Business and Society,” in Business and Society Review, 2026, Vol. 131(1). Reginald Matthews, a current Human Capital Development (Instructional Technology and Design) doctoral student, recently co-authored a book chapter titled “Developing and Designing Effective Online Learning Across Diverse Environments” with Dr. Lorilyn M. Thompson in the book Exploring Effective Online Teaching and Learning Strategies. Their chapter highlights effective approaches to designing inclusive, adaptable, and high-quality online learning experiences across diverse environments. The book is available to read online here.

Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang, Associate Professor, recently presented at the 105th Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. Zhang presented two papers on Active Travel in the sessions of “Transportation Access for Children, Caregivers, and Families” and “Research on Vulnerable Road User Safety”. Selection for these sessions is highly competitive and subject to a rigorous, multi-stage peer-review process managed by TRB. Notably, the two papers were recommended to be published in the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board.

Elena Knoll, a current undergraduate Business Administration student, recently accepted a Marketing and Content Creation Internship with the International Elite Program (IEP). IEP is a global soccer organization committed to expanding access to the sport for individuals of all backgrounds, with a strong focus on youth development in urban and underserved communities.

Susan Dobson, current Human Capital Development doctoral student, recently published her first article. Drawing on more than 15 years as a recreational age-group triathlete and her expertise as a public health practitioner, Susan served as a co-author on an interdisciplinary triathlon research study, ! Their article, “Injury Epidemiology and Preventive Strategies in Triathletes: A Study of the 2022 Season,” was published in the Journal of Sports Rehabilitation in January. Heather Glausier, a current Human Capital Development doctoral student, had an exciting Fall 2025 semester of accomplishments. Heather was promoted to Assistant Director, Career Education and Employment Readiness in Career Services and recently presented her interactive workshop, “Career Ready for Life,” at the Spring Educators Retreat hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Faculty Development. During the session, faculty explored the NACE career readiness competencies and ways to intentionally embed them into course design through best-practice syllabi, assignment alignment, and collaboration with Career Services.

Dr. Yuan Zhang, Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering Technology, was selected as a 2026 Faculty Fellow in the USM Faculty Leadership Institute, beginning in January. The Faculty Leadership Institute brings together an interdisciplinary community focused on leadership and professional development through training, workshops, and engagement with campus and community leaders.

These competitive awards are intended to reduce the burden of dissertation-related expenses while helping to decrease students’ time to degree.

He served as both Session Chair and Presenter, sharing his research on “How ChatGPT Can Help Address the Seven Wastes of Lean Manufacturing.”

Dr. Kenneth Kirkland, Human Capital Development doctoral candidate, was recently appointed as the Chief External Affairs Officer for the Alabama Board of Nursing. The position is responsible for the Leadership Institute, Center for Nursing Excellence, Workforce Development, Strategic Planning, Continuous Quality Improvement, and Nursing Education Programs for the agency.

Dr. Bradley Winton has been selected to serve as a Provost Faculty Fellow in Fall 2025, where he will focus on “Career Guidance and Readiness for Students” at Southern Miss. He will analyze current practices, evaluate how career readiness is integrated into coursework, and recommend future programming to support student success. This fellowship provides faculty the opportunity to contribute to key academic initiatives within the Office of the Provost.
