Student Groups

Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA)

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA), an official ALA student group, strives to support and contribute to the professional development and education of library and information science students, both graduate and undergraduate, at the USM School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). LISSA works to provide SLIS students with an active channel of communication and representation with the administration and faculty and encourages professional contacts within the field of librarianship. Membership is open to all USM SLIS students.

Southern Miss Student Archivists (SMSA)

The purpose of SMSA is to acquaint members with the objectives, ethics, activities, and publications of the archival profession and the Society of American Archivists (SAA), to provide opportunities for members to discuss archival issues and the archival profession, interact with professional archivists, and engage in professional activities, to promote collaboration and communication with other student groups within The University of Southern Mississippi and with other organizations such as the Society of Mississippi Archivists (SMA) in order to develop the mutual interests of the library and archival professions, and to promote archival interests within the university.

Tuition, Financial Aid

For current tuition costs, please check the Business Services Web site, or contact Business Services directly at (601) 266-4137. Tuition and fee costs may change over time without notice so contact Business Services for current tuition rates. 

There is an additional fee associated with our online classes but online programs are exempt from out-of-state fees. Students are responsible for books, supplies and room and board.

Financial Aid is available for SLIS students. For more information or to apply for federal student loans or grants, visit the Southern Miss Office of Financial Aid.

Southern Miss Scholarships

Molline Mayfield Keyes Scholarship

The purpose of this fund is to award a scholarship to graduate students majoring in Library Science with a minimum3.5 grade-point average in the senior year of their bachelor's degree and a 3.0 GPA throughout their master's degree. Recipients should be residents of the state of Mississippi with preference given to students with need.  

School of Library and Information Science Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student with financial need and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the School of Library and Information Science. The student must have completed a minimum of 9 credit hours of graduate work in the School of Library and Information Science at Southern Miss. The recipient does not have to be a resident of the state of Mississippi.

H.W. Wilson Foundation School of Library and Information Science Annual Scholarship

The purpose of this fund is to provide two (2) $1,000 scholarships, awarded annually to students in the Master of Library and Information Science program who are in good academic standing.

Scholarships are available through the USM Foundation’s scholarship opportunity Web site. Students may apply online each year from January 15 to February 15 at usmfoundation.com/GO (sometimes the information on the Foundation website has the previous year but the scholarships are awarded each year).
