Allan Nation

Fron 1977 until 2016, Allan Nation was the editor and publisher of The Stockman Grass Farmer magazine, an international publication that covers management-intensive grassland enterprises for producers of pasture-raised livestock.  It is the only monthly publication in North America dedicated solely to grassland farming in all its aspects and is circulated nationwide and to 30 foreign countries.  The son of a commercial farmer, Nation, who died in 2016, grew up in Greenville, Mississippi.  He started his journalism career at age 16 as an agriculture reporter for the Delta Democrat Times newspaper in Greenville.  Upon graduation from high school, Nation enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi.  While at USM, he was the editorial cartoonist for the Student Printz and worked in the advertising department of WDAM-TV.  Upon graduation, he became art director at WDAM and worked in that capacity until 1971 when he was hired to open a branch office of an advertising agency in Jackson, Mississippi.  He worked in the advertising business until buying The Mississippi Valley Publishing Company in 1977.  Nation traveled to some 30 countries studying and consulting on grassland-farming.  He authored nine books, including 2009’s The Moving Feast, a history of food production in Southeast Mississippi.  He was inducted into the MCJ Hall of Fame in 2010.
