The Arthur J. Kaul Memorial Fund was established to honor long-time professor, Dr. Art Kaul, who passed away in April of 2008. The fund was established by his wife, Nancy Kaul, to support Southern Miss mass communication and journalism doctoral students nearing completion of their degree programs.

Art Kaul , a native of St. Louis, joined the journalism faculty at Southern Miss in 1984. He served as journalism department chair from 1989 until 1998 and was the assistant director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism from 2001 to 2008. A brilliant and animated teacher, he received the University Excellence in Teaching Award in 1989. He served many years on the USM Faculty Senate and was president in 1999-2000. Dr. Kaul earned undergraduate degree in English and psychology from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., a master’s in humanities from Western Kentucky University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in journalism from Southern Illinois University.

Prior to entering academia, he worked as a reporter and education writer for daily newspapers in Kentucky and Missouri. He served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics and Journalism Monographs and in several national leadership roles for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He edited “American Literary Journalists, 1945-1995, Volume 185, Dictionary of Literary Biography” (1997) and published approximately 35 articles, essays and reviews. Dr. Kaul directed approximately 20 doctoral dissertations, including the winner of the Margaret Blanchard Prize for the best dissertation on mass communication history produced in 2004.  He died April 29, 2008, and was inducted posthumously into the School of Mass Communication and Journalism Hall of Fame during a symposium held in his honor on Feb. 27, 2009.
