Dr. Mazharul Haque

Dr. Mazharul Haque served on The University of Southern Mississippi faculty from 1984 to 2010, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in media theory, research, law, ethics and other areas including international communication.  He earned a master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dacca in Bangladesh.  Before his academic career, Dr. Haque served for seven years as an information officer for the governments of Pakistan and Bangladesh.  He served as director of graduate studies in the USM School of Communication from 1990 to 1995.  He directed the dissertations of more than 30 mass communication doctoral students, and he served as a member on the dissertation committees of countless more.  A brilliant and demanding teacher, Dr. Haque was also a prolific scholar who lectured at conferences across the United States and at universities around the world.  He published a multitude of journal articles, book chapters, and monographs.  He is the author of What is News in India?  A Content Analysis of Elite Dailies and co-author of Representations of the Cultural Revolution in the Films of the Fifth Generation Filmmakers of China.  At the time of his induction into the MCJ Hall of Fame in 2010, he had recently retired from his position at Southern Miss and accepted a professorship at  Gulf University for Science and Technology in Kuwait.
