Dr. Lance Nail, dean of the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi, credits assistant professor Kimberly Goodwin for reinvigorating a dormant real estate degree program.

For her tireless efforts in research and curriculum management Goodwin has been named the Parham Bridges Endowed Professor of Real Estate at Southern Miss. As the Bridges Professor, Goodwin is responsible for advancing knowledge of real estate through high impact research and for helping educate the next generation of real estate professionals.

“Even though only a junior faculty member, Dr. Goodwin has already established a research record that has garnered recognition within the academy,” said Nail. “Her teaching effectiveness is measured both by testimony from students regarding her positive teaching style while maintaining rigor in her courses and for her commitment to continuous improvement through assessment of learning outcomes.”

A Newton, N.J. native, Goodwin has served as assistant professor of finance at Southern Miss since the fall of 2008. Nail points out that she received unanimous support from the tenured finance faculty for selection as the Bridges Professor.

Goodwin cites enthusiasm and innovation as key components she brings to the classroom environment.

“My courses are rigorous but provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful,” said Goodwin. “I've had several students change their major to real estate after taking one of my classes or develop an interest they plan to pursue further after graduation.”

Goodwin says the Bridges appointment provides substantial support to enhance the work she has already begun at Southern Miss.

“The Bridges Professorship raises my profile in the local real estate community, which raises the profile of our program and creates more job opportunities for our graduates,” she said. It also supports my research productivity and ability to network while presenting my research at major international conferences. All of this then comes full circle back to students because I can talk to them about how important real estate markets are to the global economy and what research is being done related to the topics we study in class.”
