Southern Miss College of Business Students Meet with Executives

More than 35 companies participated in the annual Experience Business Casually event sponsored by the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi. The event was held on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

A total of 215 Southern Miss business students attended the event – a 90 percent increase from the previous year. Company representatives made presentations to 16 business classes as part of the program, with 684 students in those classes.

The program included a series of “stations” designed to help students with professional business etiquette – ranging from proper handshakes to appropriate attire.

“Experience Business Casually is an important event for us because it allows us to supplement what the students are learning in the classroom as well as make connections between students and employers,” said Amy Yeend, Assistant Director of Career Services in the College of Business. “It is also a great way to strengthen relationships between the college and our stakeholders, including alumni, our Business Advisory Council, and both local and national employers.”

Paul Avery, Vice President and General Manager of Lady Luck Casino, said the opportunity to connect with students provided a win-win outcome for everyone involved.

“As an alumnus of USM and the College of Business, I personally enjoy the opportunity to share my real world experiences with these future leaders,” he said. “I wish that the Experience Business Casually program existed when I attended as it would have been very beneficial to my transition from college to the workforce.”
