Janette Hreish, a graduate student in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected for a competitive internship in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Department at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Hreish is one of two students selected nationwide for the internship position.

“It is not surprising that Janette was offered this prestigious placement,” said Amy Rosonet, clinical instructor and director of the Speech Language Pathology clinic. “Janette embodies diligence and enthusiasm as a graduate student clinician. Students like Janette are a marvelous reflection of our department and university.”

Hreish's career objective is to work with the pediatric population in the hospital setting. She will begin the externship in January and will work with patients ranging from neonatal to age 21. She will do assessments and therapy for various disorders such as feeding, voice, speech and language.

“I am looking forward to applying what I have learned through my academic career to best serve the children at the hospital,” said Hreish. “I expect to gain a deeper appreciation for the field of speech-language pathology, and a stronger clinician skill set to best serve my patients and clients in the future.”

Hreish, a Columbus, Miss. native, said she chose to pursue speech-language pathology because she wanted a career where she could invest in and interact with individuals.

“Being a speech-language pathologist allows me to help improve the quality of life for many individuals who have speech, language, swallowing, and voice disorders,” said Hreish. “Many of these impairments are skills I often take for granted. I realize now what a gift these skills are, and being a speech-language pathologists allows me to help others strengthen and attain these skills.”

Students pursuing a graduate degree in speech-language pathology are required to complete an externship and have the opportunity apply to programs across the United States. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is ranked among the nation's top pediatric hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report.
