Students Present Research at National Conference in Oklahoma

Six University of Southern Mississippi students presented their scholarly projects at the annual National Conference of Undergraduate Research in Edmond, Okla. April 4-7, along with 4,000 other students from across country. The event, which featured participants from more than 400 institutions, was first established in 1987 by the Council on Undergraduate Research as a way to both celebrate and promote the research and creative activities of undergraduates.
Students attending from Southern Miss represented its McNair Scholars Program and Drapeau Center for Undergraduate Research. McNair Program Director Carolyn Cawthon and Kim Brown, assistant director for the program, attended the conference with the students.
“NCUR is the premier forum showcasing undergraduate student research and innovation,” Cawthon said. “It was such a great opportunity for our students to network with other researchers from around the world.”
Student participants and their presentation titles included:
*Hayley Allen (senior chemistry and biochemistry major; Matthew Donahue, mentor): “Asymmetric Synthesis of Nitrogen Heterocycles and Investigations into Their Use as CKD/GSK3 Inhibitors”
*Quenton Gilmore (senior sociology major; Karen Kozlowski, mentor): “Implicit Racial Bias in Higher Education”
*Corai Jackson (senior psychology major; Lawrence Patihis, mentor): “Memory of Love for Parents Among Black and White College Students”
*Gabriella Reyes (junior Biological Sciences major; Glen Shearer, mentor): “The Histoplasma Capsulation DNA Damage Response Protein, DDR48< is Required for Resistance to Antifungal Drugs”
*Reginald Virgil (senior social work major; Delories Williams, mentor): “Keep Calm, Let's Discuss Racism”
*Henry Woodyard (senior economics major; Ward Sayre, mentor): “The Impact of Private School Competitive Effects on Public School Racial Segregation”
