The Beginning of the Journey by Linda BeachThe University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art will present Arboreal Musings, an exhibition of quilts by fiber artist Linda Beach Sept. 5 through 28 in the Gallery of Art and Design on the Hattiesburg campus. And opening reception is set for Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Beach is an award-winning fiber artist whose work has been commissioned for many public art installations as well as juried into a number of nationally prominent art exhibitions. The depth and complexity that she achieves in her quilts has led to the inclusion of her work in several notable publications and books, as well as making her a sought-after lecturer and teacher.

She has served on the Board of Directors for Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) and as an artist-in-residence at Denali, Rocky Mountain, Acadia and Mesa Verde National Parks. She currently works out of her studio near New Orleans, La.

In addition to the exhibition, Linda will also present a quilting workshop entitled, “Piecing It All Together,” Sept. 28, from noon until 3:30 p.m.

For anyone who has ever wanted to take that “next step” and follow his/her own creative quilting path, this could be the starting point. In the workshop, Beach will discuss her approach to design, her piecing technique and how that technique influences her pattern drafting. From beginning fabric choices to final finished edges, the workshop will cover her process for creating pieced art quilts.

This is not a hands-on workshop, but a tutorial to supply attendees with the information necessary to begin their projects at home. Workshop space is limited to 20 participants.

These events are made possible with generous support from the Nan and Ben Stevens Art and Music Endowment through the USM Foundation.
