End-of-the-year events focus on students

The first couple weeks in May are a frenzy as students take over study spaces across campus to prepare for finals. Although, student organizations at Southern Miss make sure Golden Eagles have a much-needed mental break from cramming by providing opportunities to enjoy time with friends.

Before graduation and summer commences each May, the Southern Miss Activities Council and the Freshman Associates, respectively, host Crawfish Fest and Freshman Finale.

Crawfish Fest, on Centennial Lawn, includes the preparation of 20,000 pounds of crawfish for the campus and local communities.

“This event is traditionally the last campus event of the year,” says Southern Miss Activities Council President Alesha Knox, who was instrumental in coordinating the celebration.

Freshman Associates hosts the annual Freshman Finale event, which actually is a celebration for all Southern Miss students. This year’s theme was “Hollywood” and attracted students of all classifications to come out and enjoy free fun and food.

“My goal and my committee’s goal was for this year’s Freshman Finale to go bigger and grander than years before,” says Allen J. Moore, the freshman music education major who was the committee chair for the event.

Between the two events, more than 1,800 of students enjoyed a live band and DJ, climbing wall, inflatable slides, photo booth and caricature artist, carnival games, food and giveaways.
