Oil, Snake Oil, & Fake Oil: AI Literacy in Mediated Society
![]()
This one-hour workshop introduces students to the ethical use of artificial intelligence by exploring the often-invisible systems behind AI technologies. Participants will learn how AI is shaped not only by algorithms but also by cultural assumptions, data infrastructures, environmental costs, and human labor. The session highlights issues such as data centers’ environmental footprint, the hidden workers who help train AI systems, and the long history of algorithmic bias. The workshop also examines how AI can be used in misinformation and disinformation campaigns and introduces tools for identifying AI-generated or misleading content. Through discussion and pair-share activities, students will build practical AI literacy skills and learn how to reduce bias in AI systems.

AI-powered Decision Making for Business and Society
This workshop explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)
can transform business decision-making to create meaningful societal impact beyond
profit maximization. Students will gain hands-on experience with Generative AI and
a cool, intuitive drag-and-drop platform that enables rapid training and comparison
of multiple ML models to solve business problems. Students will learn how AI and ML
can be applied to Mississippi-focused challenges, such as improving healthcare access
disparities in rural areas through telemedicine, promoting sustainable timber operations,
and enhancing hurricane preparedness and disaster response planning.
