New Student and Retention Programs strives to help transfer students acclimate to Southern Miss by providing opportunities, connections and resources that lead to academic success. We recognize that transfer students have unique needs and experiences, and seek to provide guidance and assistance as we welcome students into the Southern Miss community.
Golden Eagle Welcome Week (GEWW) is an extended orientation program that allows students to acclimate to campus and to Hattiesburg the week before starting classes. Transfer students can participate in the activities with GEWW events just for transfer students!
The Transfer Student Association is a student organization that helps to connect transfer students to one another and assist each other in areas of need at the university level. TSA plans events for all transfer students every month including the kickoff carnival held during Golden Eagle Welcome Week, cookies and conversation, vision board parties, and more!
The Transfer Transitions mentor program matches new transfer students with a Transfer Transition Leader, a student leader in the Office of New Student and Retention Programs who is a transfer student. Three to four times a semester, Transfer Transitions Leaders meet with their mentees one-on-one, or with their small group (all new transfer students). At the end of every semester, the Transfer Transition Leaders will host one large event for the entire cohort of mentees.
Every month, our office hosts a Transfer Tuesday live session on Facebook where an office on campus is interviewed so transfer students can get more information about resources available on campus.
