We are excited to celebrate Earth Week 2021 through various events, on and off campus, that will promote environmental awareness and share best practices for a sustainable future. These events are open to all members of the University and Hattiesburg communities, and we hope that you will join us in celebrating the beautiful planet that we call home.

home.Saturday, April 17, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The City of Hattiesburg and many other local and regional entities are sponsoring a free collection of household hazardous material. The event will be held at two locations, Bobby L. Chain Airport and the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center. This is a great opportunity to properly dispose of items like paint, lawn chemicals, household cleaners, etc. Electronics are also accepted so gather up your unusable gadgets to allow them to be disposed of appropriately.
Saturday, April 17, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Shredding services for sensitive documents will be available at the Bobby L. Chain Airport site and is sponsored by the Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office. This event is a first-come, first-served service until the truck is full
Tuesday, April 20th
This fun photo contest allows you to help keep the campus and wider community clean! Just collect ten (or more) pieces of litter, take a picture, and post it on our social media for a chance to win prizes!
Wednesday, April 21, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Join the Horticulture Club and the Office of Sustainability for a community garden work day. This event will include weeding, planting, and learning! We will learn gardening tips, the importance of gardens, and how they help you and the environment. The community garden is located outside of the Walker Science building directly across from the Union. A FREE BOXED LUNCH will be provided. Please RSVP at volunteer.usm.edu under the opportunities tab by Friday, April 16, to guarantee your meal.
Wednesday, April 21
Will you get rewarded for being wanted? During this week, our ‘Sustainability Sheriffs’ will be out patrolling the campus in search of those using reusable mugs. Those caught will get their “mugshot” taken with our fun photo backdrop to be displayed on social media and receive a gift card of their choice.
Thursday, April 22nd
Watch a fun and educational webinar that will show us how to “Restore Our Earth”! Click here to register to view this FREE event, Our staff will be attending as well so if you are a student at USM and we see you participating, you may be one of three lucky winners to be given gift cards!

Join the Office of Sustainability and the Physical Plant, for a campus-wide clean-up as we prepare to welcome graduates and their families back to campus for Commencement Ceremonies.
