The 2020 Undergraduate Symposium on Research and Creative Activity (UGS) has been cancelled. This step was taken in response to President Bennett’s message from 3/12/2020 and follows best practices (see Centers for Disease Control directives) to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.
DCUR is extending the submission deadline of proposals for Drapeau Summer 2020 Research Grants and Eagle SPUR Grants for summer and fall projects until April 7, 2020. Students interested in applying for financial support of their research or creative activity should communicate electronically with their mentor, undergo CITI training, and submit their application with the necessary support information (budget and mentor support) by April 7, 2020.
The Drapeau Center for Undergraduate Research at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) recently awarded junior music performance major Omar Martinez a grant to further his research on music for the double bass.
The grant allowed him to travel to Mexico to examine works by Mexican composers that feature the double bass and will establish an important addition to double bass repertoire. Ultimately, Martinez hopes to illustrate the significant contributions that Mexican composers have made to classical music. Read more.

David Hii, a University of Southern Mississippi (USM) senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English, will have one of his essays published in an upcoming edition of the highly respected major literary journal, Salt Hill Journal. Read more.
