Preprofessional Office (Pre-Law & Pre-Healthcare Profession)

This office assists students who wish to gain admission to professional schools in the field of their choice, including medical school, dental school, physical therapy school, and more. 


CAS Undergraduate Services

This office has advisors that can assist any student with  questions or issues related to their academic success, including choosing or changing a major/minor, finding resources on campus (tutoring, counseling, scholarships), explaining policies and procedures, and more. 

 

Graduate Students

Graduate Student Association (GSA)

The mission of the CAS Graduate Student Association (GSA) is to provide valuable training opportunities and professional development experiences, and to create a space in which graduate students can voice any concerns they might have about their graduate education. Graduate Student Research Grant

The CAS Graduate Student Research Grant is a competitive funding opportunity open to all graduate students in good academic standing in the College of Arts and Sciences. The CAS Graduate Student Research Grant may be used to support a wide variety of research or creative activities that contribute to the applicant’s thesis, dissertation, or capstone project. The 2023 competition will award four (4) Master’s Research Grants of $500 each and four (4) Doctoral Research Grants of $1,000 each. The deadline for the 2023 CAS Graduate Student Research Grant competition is Friday, April 14, 2023.


CAS Graduate Student Travel Award

The CAS Graduate Student travel award provides funding to graduate students who present their research or creative/artistic work at conferences, meetings, and other professional events. For the 2023-2024 academic year, these events can be either virtual or face-to-face. Application deadlines for the Fall 2023 CAS Graduate Student Travel Award is August 25, 2023. This award will cover eligible travel from September 1, 2023 through February 29, 2024.

Research

Mississippi Space Grant Consortium

The Mississippi Space Grant Consortium (MSSGC) is a statewide non-profit organization supported by NASA whose membership includes 17 institutions of higher learning across the state, including Southern Miss. The NASA Space Grant program is designed to encourage and motivate excellence in student performance and to raise awareness of NASA employment and research opportunities among students with relevant majors at Southern Miss.

Funding Opportunities

Each year, the College of Arts and Sciences awards travel and research funding to a select number of faculty members:

Faculty Travel Award

The CAS faculty travel award provides funding to faculty members and staff who present their research or creative/artistic work at conferences, meetings, and other professional events. For the 2023-2024 academic year, these events can be either virtual or face-to-face. Application deadlines for the Fall 2023 Faculty Travel Award is August 25, 2023. This award will cover eligible travel from September 1, 2023 through February 29, 2024.


Faculty Research Grant

The CAS Faculty Research Grant is a competitive funding opportunity open to all full-time, permanent faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences. The CAS Faculty Research Grant may be used to support a wide range of research or creative activities, including stand-alone research endeavors and pilot projects whose purpose is to help secure future funding from external sources. The 2023 competition will award six (6) Faculty Research Grants of $2,000 each.


College Committees

College Curriculum Committee 

This college-level committee evaluates proposals for undergraduate and graduate curriculum changes submitted by schools. Visit the page for a schedule of meetings and deadlines.

Staff Advisory Committee

This committee's membership consists of the administrative support specialists from all academic units in the college. It meets on the second Friday of each month at 8:30 a.m. in LAB 109 (unless otherwise announced).

Facilities

The Mannoni Performing Arts Center and Bennett Auditorium may be reserved by groups and organizations. The priorities for the facilities do include the School of Music concerts, recitals and shows, however, arrangements may be made to use the venues year-round as the calendar permits.
