Biological Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi

The undergraduate program in the Department of Biological Sciences offers two B.S. degrees, one in Biological Sciences and the other in Marine Biology. The graduate program offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Students may complete the B.S. degree either in Hattiesburg or in Long Beach. Currently, there are approximately 620 undergraduate students majoring in Biological Sciences and 125 in Marine Biology. At the graduate level, there are approximately 65 students, about half at the Ph.D. level.

The department has 30 faculty members, most with active research programs. Please visit the faculty pages to learn about faculty research interests and programs. The department houses a well-equipped core facility devoted to molecular biology and imaging. The facility is supported by an NIH-supported MS INBRE program. The department is also home to the Lake Thoreau Environmental Center, a nature preserve close to 300-acres approximately 6 miles west of the Hattiesburg Campus. In addition to environmental research, the environmental center hosts a wide variety of camps and education programs.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers a rich curriculum with classes taught by experts, vigorous research programs supported by multiple extra-mural research grants and active outreach programs in environmental education. I hope we will have a chance to engage you through one of these pursuits in the near future.
