Alan Thompson, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Dr. Alan Thompson is a tenured Associate Professor and Distinguished Teaching Scholar within the School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science and Security. He earned a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University and joined the USM faculty in 2000. Since that time he has published several scholarly books and articles focusing on legal and practical issues in law enforcement, courts and corrections. He has secured and directed multiple competitively funded research projects in excess of $1.5 million and has consulted with federal agencies such as the FBI Police Futures Working Group, the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, and the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics. Dr. Thompson previously served as Director of the Mississippi Statistical Analysis Center and is the State Reporting Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Justice Arrest Related Deaths in Custody Reporting Program. Consistent with this background, his research interests focus on topics related to law, police psychology and operations.

 Within the university community, Dr. Thompson has served his professional colleagues as chapter president of the American Association of University Professors since 2015. In 2018 he received the Excellence in University Service Award. Most recently he was appointed by University President Dr. Rodney Bennett to serve as the institution’s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative.
