The Center for Faculty Development is excited to welcome new faculty to Southern Miss. Join us for our 2023 New Faculty Orientation where you’ll get a chance to meet your colleagues and university administrators and learn everything you need to know for a successful transition to USM.

This year, FFW’s theme, Southern Miss GRIT: Growth, Resilience, Inclusion, Transformation explores opportunities to connect with colleagues, students, and institutional units. The 2023 Faculty First Week centers on cultivating a sense of belonging and purpose and encouraging inclusivity and growth as we work together.
August 24-November 30, 2023
Show Up and Write! meets weekly in the Center for Faculty Development (CFD) and provides a quiet open space for dedicated writing time. This session is offered in the CFD space (International Center, 319) and via Zoom. The writing group aims to support faculty and staff research by designating time for writing and increasing productivity through peer support and personal accountability. Bring your computer and plan to focus time on writing an article, book chapter, grant proposal, blog, or another project.
Show Up and Write! will meet every Thursday this fall from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. beginning August 24, 2023 and will conclude November 30. These sessions are come-and-go as needed for your schedule and does not include peer exchange. Faculty, staff and graduate students from all disciplines and ranks are welcome to attend.
The CFD will also be hosting monthly Show Up and Write Retreats virtually which are extended sessions of time for you to be able to diver in deeper. Retreats are held once a month on Fridays from 8:30 am - Noon. Fall 2023 retreats are scheduled for September 1, October 6, November 3, and December 1.

Tools, Techniques, and Trends in an AI-Enhanced Higher Education
The Fall 2023 Educators’ Retreat will bring together faculty, administrators, and staff to discuss strategies for effectively implementing generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies at Southern Miss. The goal of the event is to help educators at all levels harness the power of generative AI to enhance student learning, research productivity, and job performance.
The First-Year Foundations Program (FYF) expands the training and conversations that start at New Faculty Orientation. This series aims to support new faculty in their teaching, research, and overall success as a new member of our Southern Miss community. All sessions are offered in a hybrid format—new faculty can attend in person in the CFD (International Center 319) or via Zoom.

Plan, Prepare and Engage (PPE) is a workshop series hosted by the Center for Faculty Development (CFD) emphasizing course design through interactive workshops.
January 10-13, 2023
The annual series is comprised of hybrid and virtual workshops offered on topics including teaching with learning assistants, making the classroom fun, addressing the growth of cheating enabled by COVID and technology, and refreshers for online learning tools and resources available for your classroom.
