The Southern Miss History Department coordinates an annual competition each spring for junior high and high school students in the state of Mississippi. This national competition, run on the science fair model, is designed to encourage interest in History. Students submit documentaries, performances, exhibits, and research papers; winners at the Mississippi state level are eligible to compete in a national competition in Washington, D.C. Our History/Social Studies Licensure students are especially encouraged to help at the competition, both as organizers and as judges.
For more information about competition rules and guidelines, visit our National History Day in Mississippi website. If you are interested in participating in or helping with the Mississippi competition, please contact the History Department at 601.266.4333.
In conjunction with the USM History Department's World Civilization courses, the department offers a film series during the fall and spring semesters. The approximately twelve films each semester highlight the cultural diversity of the world and the ways in which history is depicted differently by different societies. For more information or to suggest films for a future series, please contact Dr.%20Andrew%20P.%20Haley or check out our current schedule.
