USM Military Veterans, Service Members and Families Take Flight with New App

Keeping up with University events and emails, seeking current information regarding financial aid and scholarships, applying for work-study employment, learning about clubs and organizations and knowing what’s going on across a college campus is oftentimes quite challenging.
To improve the overall college experience for Golden Eagle student-veterans, the University of Southern Mississippi created its first “Military Student” App simply referred to as “USMEagleVet.” Months of hard work by the USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families produced the unique mobile friendly App device for use by current and prospective military students.
“Through collaboration with USM iTech, our staff has created a remarkably exceptional ‘military friendly’ mobile App device that brings the campus to your fingertips and makes it easier for military students to navigate all things USM while on the go,” says Michael McGee, USM Veteran and Military Affairs Outreach Coordinator.
The new App device was carefully designed with input from students, the military community, USM staff and faculty as well as a professional marketing design agency.
Characterized as a “complete and fully functional military caring App,” the device combines USM student success resources and a wide variety of external “tools” to provide users a single source point of contact for application, enrollment, navigation through academic, and social life. The key components considered in the overall App design include: simplicity in design and functionality, user friendly functions, a variety of full-service options, fast loading screens, flexibility and a wide-variety of search options.
Each of the components are integrated into the App to provide users immediate access for gaining information, discovering campus and VA-centric programs as well as to assist in the decision-making process. One of the most unique features is the connectivity to selected online self-help outlets designed to ease and assist veterans as they transition from the military to university student life.
According to USM Senior VA Certification Official David Magola, “We have talked about creating such a ‘tool’ for our military students but finally put into practice lessons learned and features to provide our students an edge in pursuit and completion of their academic degrees.”
Added Magola, “At the USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families we believe our students deserve the best in all we can do to help them to succeed in the classroom as we work together for the future. Whether you are browsing for information, seeking VA support or simply checking-out what USM has to offer, we take our job in guiding military veterans, service members and their families seriously.”
Stacey Henley, USM Gulf Park campus Military and Veteran Services Specialist whose original thought went a long way in fashioning the App from the drawing board to reality, noted, “The new USM Military Student App has a lot in store for students and our hope is all our military veterans, Service Members and their Families along with future Golden Eagles will enjoy what we believe will prove to be a most remarkable campus tool for all.”
Starting Nov. 11, 2020, all USM students, including new freshmen, transfer students, non-traditional and prospective students will be able to use “the “USMEagleVet” App. The App is available for download free in the Google App Store and Apple App Store.
