Dr. Susannah Ural

A University of Southern Mississippi faculty member's exemplary scholarship in Civil War history has earned her a spot on the editorial board of one the most respected journals examining the subject.

Dr. Susannah Ural, professor of history and co-director of The Dale Center for the Study of War and Society at Southern Miss, was recently appointed to the editorial board of The Journal of the Civil War Era (JCWE), considered the preeminent academic journal in Civil War studies. Published quarterly and associated with the Society of Civil War Historians, the JCWE focuses on the sectional crisis of the 1850s, the war, slavery and emancipation, Reconstruction, and the evolving memory of this conflict.

During their three-year terms, board members attend semi-annual meetings where they hear reports on publications, subscribers, and the focus of the journal, serve as a sounding-board for the editor, and highlight especially strong academic papers or projects the journal might encourage scholars to develop for publication.

Dr. Ural has been a member of several other academic journal boards, and also currently serves as chair of the editorial board of The Journal of Military History.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to give back to the field Civil War history, which was been so welcoming and supportive of me throughout my career,” Dr. Ural said. “It is also an excellent chance to highlight to those outside our region the strengths Southern Miss's History program has in the fields of Civil War history, war and society, and Southern history.

“The JCWE is one of the most engaging journals published today, and it's exciting to be part of an organization so dedicated to supporting academic and public history of the Civil War era.”

Dr. Ural joined the USM Department of History faculty in 2009. Her areas of expertise include 19th-century America, with an emphasis on the socio-military history of the U.S. Civil War era; soldier ideology; ethnicity and war; veterans and families; and digital military history. She is the author of Don't Hurry Me Down to Hades: The Civil War in the Words of Those Who Lived It (Osprey, 2013); her latest book is Hood's Texas Brigade: The Soldiers and Families of the Confederacy's Most Celebrated Unit (Louisiana State University Press, 2017). She is also editing a Texas Brigade family's correspondence for a project titled This Murderous Storm: A Confederate Family at War.

“We're extremely proud that one of our own has been named to the journal's editorial board,” said Dr. Kyle Zelner, chair of the USM Department of History and co-director for The Dale Center. “Dr. Ural's appointment is a testament to the originality and prominence of her own research, as well as the respected place the Dale Center and Department of History at Southern Miss holds in this important field.”
