Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy status, or perceptions of same in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.  Title IX, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and USM’s Sexual Misconduct Policy prohibit all forms of the following:

  • discrimination
  • discriminatory harassment and
  • sexual harassment, including non-consensual sexual contact, sexual violence, domestic violence and stalking. 

The University of Southern Mississippi provides reporting options and resources to students, faculty, and staff to address concerns related to sexual harassment and sexual violence.

Title IX Office

Role of Office:

Under the guidance of the Title IX Coordinator, the Title IX Office provides services incidental to fostering a safe educational and work environment for the campus community by providing information about available on and off campus resources as well as assisting with navigation of relevant University processes.

Services Provided:   

  • Training regarding Title IX
  • Assisting with complaint resolution by documenting an information resolution
  • Facilitation of the Formal Title IX complaint process
  • Referral to campus and community resources

Student Ombudsman Services:

Role of Office in Title IX Cases:

To support the academic success of students, USM’s Office of Student Ombudsman Services provides assistance to those who are involved in a Title IX case if their involvement begins to disrupt their academic progress. They are able to review documentation, and, if authenticated, they can provide a written notice to the instructor and the student.

Ombudsman Services Provided in Title IX Cases:

  • Authenticating documentation for those involved in Title IX cases
  • Communicating with instructor and student regarding the authenticity of documentation

NOTE:   Instructors have the discretion to make a determination of how they will treat the notice received from the Office of Student Ombudsman Services.
