Experience Honors Header

Qualifying high school seniors are invited to join us throughout November and December for our virtual "Experience Honors" events!

These events are for students considering the Honors College at Southern Miss, where students Discover, Experience, and Thrive during their college careers and beyond!

Discover Honors
Monday, Nov. 9 – 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

Are you interested in learning more about the Southern Miss Honors College? Join us virtually on Monday, November 9 at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time). We will discuss our unique Honors curriculum, research opportunities, scholarships, application process, and more! This event is aimed at high school seniors, but parents/guardians are welcome!

Honors Housing, LIVE!
Wednesday, Nov. 11 – 4 p.m. (Central Time)

First-year students live in our living-learning community which is housed in Vann Hall, part of our beautiful Century South complex, so there will always be a friend nearby! Join us virtually on Wednesday, November 11 at 4 p.m. (Central Time). We will virtually walk through the Honors dorm and answer questions about the Housing application and living on campus! This event is aimed at high school seniors, but parents/guardians are welcome!

Colloquium Experience
Thursday, Nov. 12– 6 p.m. OR 7:30 p.m. (Central Time)

Are you wondering what a Colloquium class is? Or what a Colloquium class might be like? Join us for this mini-Colloquium experience to learn more about the type of learning you will experience in your first year in the Honors College. During these sessions, some of our Honors Colloquium professors will lead you through activities and discussions that will challenge you to think differently and ask the right questions. Join us virtually on Thursday, November 12 at 6 p.m. OR 7:30 p.m. (Central Time). This is a STUDENT-ONLY event! 

Registration for the Colloquium Experience events is on a first-come-first-serve basis!, and space is limited!

Student Research Showcase
Monday, Nov. 16 – 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

As juniors and seniors in the Honors College, our Honors Scholars conduct research on topics about which they are deeply curious. Join us as our Honors Scholars briefly present their research in progress and take questions from guests. Featuring projects from various disciplines, these presentations will help you imagine where your future research might lead!  Join us virtually on Monday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time). This event is aimed at high school seniors, but parents/guardians are welcome!

Honors Scholarships
Tuesday, Nov. 17 – 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

Every student admitted to the Honors College receives scholarship support in the form of the Honors Scholar Award, Honors College Discovery Scholarship, or Honors College Presidential Scholarship. We will spend this evening going over these scholarships and answering any questions you might have! Join us virtually on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time). This event is aimed at high school seniors, but parents/guardians are welcome!

Application Workshop
Thursday, Nov. 19 – 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

Long before the Honors medallion, before the thesis, before the puppies, and before the studying, the journey begins when you take the first step: the application. What is the “GO” system? How can I create a compelling application? What in the world is the “supplemental item” and what should I choose for mine? We will answer these and other questions so that students can put their best foot forward. Join us virtually on Thursday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time). This event is aimed at high school seniors, but parents/guardians are welcome to attend if your student is unavailable!

Honors Alumni Connection
Thursday, Dec. 3 – 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

You and your family are invited to virtually network with some of our most successful Honors alumni working within a variety of professions, while learning more about how the Honors College at Southern Miss prepared them to take on the world. Join us virtually on Thursday, December 3 at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time). This event is aimed at high school seniors, but parents/guardians are welcome!

Honors Community-Trivia Night!
Thursday, Dec. 10 – 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

Honors at USM is more than an academic program; we are a community! Our diverse community of individuals consistently impresses us with their varied interests and activities – from internships to research experiences to study abroad and beyond! We love how our Honors Scholars support one another in their endeavors—and trust us, they have tons! Join our Honors Scholars as they invite you to be a part of the Honors community for the evening. Join us virtually on Thursday, December 10 at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time) for a trivia competition with current and prospective Honors Scholars and then hang around for some Q&A. We will split everyone into trivia teams randomly. This is a STUDENT-ONLY event!

Fall Bash Week: October 26-October 30

Monday, October 26 - Pumpkin Party

All spots are reserved

Join us on Monday, October 26th at 7pm at the Honor House for an in-person Pumpkin Painting party! Due to COVID-19 precautions, we can only allow a total of 30 people to attend. Tuesday, October 27 - Instagram Costume Contest

Submit your ALL TIME BEST Halloween photos for a chance to win amazing prizes! Your submissions are due MONDAY, OCTOBER 26TH at 5PM. The submissions will be posted all day on Tuesday, October 27th and the winners of each category will be announced at 7PM! The categories are Scariest, Funniest, Most Creative, Best Couple/Group Costume, and Best Overall.

Rules

  • You can submit a current year or past year costume. Cannot span back longer than 2 years ago.
  • Only one submission per person!
  • No campaigning to your friends for their votes.

Wednesday, October 28 – Dorm Desserts

RSVP coming soon

Join us on October 28th at 7pm in the Vann Hall Floor Lounges! We will bake and decorate Halloween sugar cookies! Due to COVID-19 precautions, we will only allow 6 people to RSVP per floor - first come, first serve (12 spots per night). Each floor will have a Community Life Committee Member to assist. If you do not live on campus, you can join us from your kitchen at home or in your apartment! You do not have to live in Vann Hall to participate! If you do not live in Vann Hall, we will arrange for you to attend the event in the lounge, but let us know in the spaces below. For everyone's safety, masks are required to cover the nose and mouth and temperatures will be taken at the door.

 

Thursday, October 29 - Trick-or-Treating at the Honor House

Stop by the Honor House all day on Thursday, October 29th to trick-or-treat! Costumes encouraged, but not required.

 

Friday, October 30 - Puppy Day

Please join us for Puppy Day on October 30th from 11-1 pm at the Honor House! Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we can only allow 10 students per 20 minutes session. You must wear a mask and socially distance yourself! Once a session is full, we will remove it from the signup.
