Leadership and Student Involvement

Community Outreach

Page Content

The Office of Student Life impacts the campus community through Civic and Community Engagement. We coordinate meaningful volunteer and learning experiences to address needs in the Southern Miss and Hattiesburg community. In collaboration with our community partners, we strive to promote service and positive social change. Students can get involved through annual service programs, volunteer opportunities hosted by Volunteer USM, and the IMPACT Community Work-Study Program.

The IMPACT Community Work-Study Program helps USM students give back to the Hattiesburg community through service and volunteerism while learning skills that make them ready for life. Students may be able to work as tutors, office assistants, event assistants, and more, and they are able to work up to 20 hours per week.

IMPACT students must be full-time undergraduate students that are awarded work-study funds and must have transportation. To check work-study eligibility, contact the Office of Financial Aid at financial.aidFREEMississippi or (601) 266-4774.

IMPACT applications open august 2026

Alternative Service Break (ASB) is a unique learning experience where students participate in service education and volunteer opportunities. Students participate in a variety of cultural, educational, and reflective activities that do good and meet community needs. Previous trips have focused on addressing issues like food insecurity, homelessness, and advocating for civil and environmental rights.
