Society of Physics Students

SPS is a professional society for physics students and students with an interest in physics. SPS was established in 1968 and is a member society of the American Institute of Physics. There are more than 700 chapters across the United States with over 5000 student members. The Southern Miss chapter of SPS was chartered in 1968 after existing as a student section of the American Institute of Physics from 1960 to 1968.  We are an organization that promotes physics throughout our community and state; we often do demonstrations for high schools and the public at local events. We also organize social activities.

The Southern Miss chapter of SPS meets twice every month in the Bobby Chain Technology building. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our faculty advisor, Dr. Michael Vera, or our department chair, Dr. Khin Maung.

Sigma Pi Sigma

Sigma Pi Sigma honors outstanding scholarship in physics. Sigma Pi Sigma is housed within the Society of Physics Students, a member society of the American Institute of Physics. Members are nominated and elected by local chapters. Sigma Pi Sigma was founded in 1921 and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. There are over 75,000 members of Sigma Pi Sigma. The first Southern Miss member was inducted in May of 1971 and since that time over 100 members have been inducted into the Southern Miss Physics and Astronomy Chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma.
