The Southern Miss Guitar Studio is one of the leading guitar programs in the region.
Nationally-recognized concert artist and educator Nicholas Ciraldo, D.M.A. recruits
and trains talented students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Students have gone on to pursue graduate degrees at various prestigious music programs
across the country, received top scores in performance competitions, and found meaningful
employment in music.
A focus of the studio is developing the “whole guitarist” – someone with solid technique,
well-trained musicianship, keen sight-reading ability, excellent aural skills, practical
foundations in teaching, well-versed knowledge of the major repertoire, and realistic
perspectives on the field. Dr. Ciraldo also provides a positive approach to competition,
collegiality, professionalism, and performance confidence.

Performance opportunities are available in the weekly “Recital Class,” the end-of-semester
“Guitar Gala” and “Chamber Music Recital I and II,” and throughout the year with the
USM Guitar Society. Performances for guest artists occur every semester. Attaining
as much performance experience as possible before graduation is a high priority, and
so the guitar studio helps students procure off-campus recitals, travel to competitions
and festivals, and more.
Guitar scholarships are available and can be stacked with other scholarships from
Music and/or the Office of Admissions. Some scholarships require a December 1st application
