Educating the Next Generation of Ocean Leaders
The School of Ocean Science and Engineering is committed to advancing understanding and stewardship of our ocean and coastal systems through high-impact education, innovative research, and meaningful partnerships.
SOSE offers an exceptional undergraduate experience rooted in hands-on learning, interdisciplinary coursework, and access to world-class research that leads to meaningful career opportunities. Our undergraduate students explore Oceanography and Ocean Mapping, Marine Biology, and Ocean Engineering, through immersive fieldwork, laboratory investigation, and coastal and offshore research cruises.
Early in their undergraduate careers, students are encouraged to engage in faculty-led research projects addressing topics such as fisheries dynamics, ocean mapping, ecosystem restoration, and climate-driven ocean change at our research sites across Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
Our programs provide a rigorous and practical education that prepares students to lead in academic, governmental, and private-sector careers. Through mentorship by our faculty—recognized experts in their fields—students receive individualized support and opportunities to contribute to impactful research that informs regional and global ocean policy.
With direct access to the Gulf of America and advanced facilities and resources including research vessels, autonomous systems labs, and coastal field stations, SOSE offers an unparalleled setting for experiential learning. Our students graduate with the technical skills, critical thinking abilities, and real-world experience needed to shape the future of ocean science and engineering.

Out-of-state Tuition
Among six universities, Southern Miss offers the most affordable out-of-state tuition for the 2025–2026 academic year, at $6,197 per semester for a 15-credit course load. This is significantly lower than its peer: tuition at the University of West Florida (UWF) nearly 55% higher, and Texas A&M University (TAMU) more than three times the cost at $19,978. USM’s competitive pricing highlights the exceptional value of its degree programs, providing high-quality education at a fraction of the cost of other regional institutions.
