The same Online Orientation content is presented in both formats. The main difference is that the Live Webinar format occurs on a scheduled date and time and allows for real-time Q&A with University staff. The Self-Paced Module format offers more flexibility because it can be completed independently within a one-month window at your own pace.

Yes, Orientation is mandatory for all new, degree-seeking students and ensures that you have everything you need for a smooth, successful start at Southern Miss. Online students can choose between one of the Online Orientation formats or an in-person session on the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campus.

Online Orientation is available to students majoring in academic programs that are 100% online (i.e., enrolled on our “Online” campus). Even if you plan to take the majority or entirety of your classes online, new students majoring in Hattiesburg or Gulf Park-based academic programs must attend an in-person Orientation session on the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campus.

Fully online students are students who are majoring in academic programs that are 100% online (i.e., no face-to-face classes). New students majoring in Hattiesburg or Gulf Park-based academic programs must attend an in-person Orientation session on the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campus.

Monitor your Southern Miss email account for important reminders and updates from the Office of Orientation and Events.

You should have received an email from helpdeskFREEMississippi with the subject line "Activate Your Southern Miss Student Account." Follow the instructions in this email to activate your SOAR account and Southern Miss student email account.

Admitted students can access Orientation registration in their SOAR account by navigating to the “Admissions” tab on the left side of the page and selecting “Orientation Registration” from the drop-down menu.

Yes, Online students are welcome to choose an in-person Orientation session on the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campus.

Please note: Online students who choose an in-person session are expected to pay the in-person session fee.

The academic colleges coordinate the advisement and course enrollment process.

Once you’ve registered for Online Orientation, your academic area will reach out to you to begin a dialogue about your proposed class schedule and degree plan. You should monitor your Southern Miss email account for messages from your advisor, and you should reply as quickly as possible. 

The process of college credit posting is initiated when an admitted student registers for Orientation.

No, immunization records are not required for students majoring in fully online programs. Hattiesburg and Gulf Park students must submit proof of two (2) immunizations for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) prior to Orientation registration.
