USM Concert Band and Wind Ensemble joint Concert at The Thomas V. Fraschillo Stage at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium
The University of Southern Mississippi Band Program invites you to a shared concert featuring the USM Concert Band and the USM Wind Ensemble. The USM Concert Band performs significant works by composers of great renown, including Richard Strauss (Allerseelen, trans. Davis), Percy Grainger (Spoon River), and John Philip Sousa (El Capitan). Other music includes Legacy Fanfare by composer, arranger, and Director of "President's Own" United States Marine Band Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin, and Incandescence by emerging composer Adrian B. Sims. The Concert Band is under the direction of Cody Edgerton. The USM Wind Ensemble proudly presents the 2025 Winds, Brass, and Percussion concerto winners in concert. This concert showcases the winners of the band’s annual concerto competition held in November of each year. These students represent the best of the best at Southern Miss. Many of our concerto winners have progressed into professional careers as performers, college professors, music educators, and/or representing our institution as performers in military bands across the nation. Join us on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, to see the future of music and Southern Miss GRIT at its finest! The Wind Ensemble is under the current direction of Catherine Rand.

Can Ancient Chinese Philosophy Make America Read Again? at Gonzales Auditorium
Reading is declining, and ancient Chinese philosophy might hold the key. Join Humanities Teacher Award recipient Dr. Timothy Gutmann for a public lecture exploring worldwide declines in reading comprehension in young people and interest in reading among adults, along with examples from Chinese history that show how reading shaped education and everyday life over the last 1,000 years. Dr. Gutmann will share how imperial China’s Confucian scholarly traditions can influence personal flourishing, critical decision-making and a healthy society. This event is free and open to the public.
