Strings

At Southern Miss, you can find community here with friends from Tupelo or Taipei! Our students come from not just Mississippi and the Southeast, but from across the U.S. and around the world! We come together in Hattiesburg to form a family, with hundreds of cherished members, working towards our musical and educational goals. Through music-learning and music-making, we create lasting memories and unbreakable bonds. We make friends and develop relationships that build bridges into the future.

Opportunities

Southern Miss String students receive weekly, hour-long lessons with a specialized professor that holds a doctorate and is known widely as a performer and teacher. After individual lessons, ensembles are the heart of our curriculum.

We value and cultivate independent musicianship, so in addition to lessons and large ensemble opportunities, students participate in chamber ensembles for additional learning and performance opportunities.

Our students work with not only our world class faculty, but a wide array of guests artists who perform and offer masterclasses here frequently.

The Future

Southern Miss string programs prepare students to perform and teach. Through our work together, USM string students are admitted into the finest grad schools; they win competitions, audition for and earn positions playing in major orchestras, and apply for and get teaching positions in colleges, universities and school programs!
