Applied Nutrition Emphasis

The Applied Nutrition emphasis is designed to provide a variety of coursework in food systems and nutrition to complement the knowledge of those that are already working in a nutrition-related field.  In addition to the strong nutrition and food systems core, students may also enroll in courses in nutrition education, leadership, and child nutrition.  Additionally, students may opt to take 2 elective courses in a different area of study to round out their degree plan.

The graduate faculty in the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems have a wide variety of experiences and research expertise.  Students are able to choose their research advisor from among the graduate faculty, and plan their final research project based on their interests.  Many students choose to conduct their research in their place of employment, which makes conducting the research and gathering the data more meaningful to the student.

The majority of students enrolled in this emphasis have a background in food, nutrition, or dietetics.  Many of these students are already practicing and decide to return to school to get the master’s degree.

To be considered for admission into the Applied Nutrition emphasis, applicants must apply through the Southern Miss online Graduate School Application.  Applications are accepted year round and must include all unofficial transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and immunization records.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our program graduates and offer our students the opportunity to connect with program alumni to gain a perspective on the program as well as job opportunities after program completion.

Applied Nutrition Emphasis does not lead to becoming a registered dietitian. For more information on becoming a registered dietitian go to our Dietetic Practice/Internship page.
