Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Scientists and teachers, business leaders and policy makers, and officers for the US Army. USM and its Army ROTC program prepare students to be innovators and leaders for the 21st century. We produce lieutenants for the active Army, the National Guard, and the US Army Reserves. Each component has 16 branches that cater to multiple interests, including infantry, military intelligence, aviation, engineering, armor and medical services corps. Warriors wanted, each with a breadth of perspective who:

  • Demonstrate a capacity for excellence
  • Confident they will be competent Army leaders because of the rigor of the program
  • Committed to the Army for the duration and open-minded about further service

GCRL Science Cafe Virtual and In-person at GCRL

Please join us for this hybrid GCRL Science Café In person at the GCRL Campus in the Caylor Building, Room 104 Zoom link: https://usm-edu.zoom.us/j/81999011694 Visit our website: https://www.usm.edu/gulf-coast-research-laboratory/gcrl-science-cafe.php Presented by: Scott Hereford, Supervisory Wildlife Biologist Scott is the Supervisory Wildlife Biologist at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1975 under authority of the Endangered Species Act to protect the critically endangered Mississippi sandhill cranes and their unique, and itself endangered, wet pine savanna habitat. The crane population, at that time only 30-35 birds, is currently at approximately 170 birds. Through intensive habitat restoration and management, restocking with captive-reared juveniles, and increased natural recruitment, the crane population continues to grow. The refuge also protects and restores the last large expanses of wet pine savanna, primarily through the use of prescribed fire. The wet pine savanna is one of the most diverse ecosystems at the ground level in the U.S. with more than 30-40 plants found in a square meter of land. Cookies, coffee, and other treats are complimentary. Masks are available. Special thanks to the sponsor of the Science Café, MS-AL Sea Grant, and USM’s Marine Education Center for tech support.

Symphonic Winds and University Band Concert at The Thomas V. Fraschillo Stage at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium

The Symphonic Winds performs a variety of musical styles, focusing on new literature written for the college band. Consisting of both music majors and minors, the Symphonic Winds is an important musical outlet for the serious musician. Most agree, this ensemble’s performances are equal to most top university wind ensembles. The Symphonic Winds is under the current direction of Dr. Colin McKenzie. Meeting once per week in the spring semester only, the University Band is a great way for non-music major band students to participate in a concert band. This ensemble also offers opportunities for music majors to perform on a secondary instrument and for graduate students to conduct and administer a major facet of the concert band program.
